Abstracting the Expressive Statement
Marilyn Hughey Phillis

This is a class of discovery, encouraging the strengthening of artistic statement through abstraction. Students should be self directed, but those needing more guidance are welcome. All will receive suggestions for developing their unique, expressive talent which may include watermedia and collage. Emphasis will be on releasing the inner spirit of the artist through their work, strong design, importance of content and imaginative use of materials. Lectures, discussions, slides demos and critiques will be woven into class time.

Marilyn Hughey Phillis, A.W.S., N.W.S., is an artist, juror, and teacher, from Wheeling, WV. She authored Watermedia Techniques for Releasing the Creative Spirit and a chapter on creativity in Bridging Time and Space, Essays on Layered Art, as well as various articles for educational art magazines. She founded and organized “Stretching Boundaries for Creative People” an international creativity seminar sponsored by Ohio Watercolor Society.

Composition Based on the Figure
Carla O'Connor

This workshop stresses bold composition and strong design using the human figure for inspiration. A different aspect of design is the focus of each day's lesson. There will be a clothed model each morning. Abstraction will be explored emphasizing the process and concentrating on composing the entire page. Carla will be working with watercolor and gouache and include frequent mini demonstrations with this medium in a direct painting way.

, AWS, DF, NWS, NWWS, received her BFA in painting from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio. She has done graduate studies at the University of the Americas, Mexico City, University of Dayton, Ohio, and University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Design and Energy in Watercolor
Frank Webb

In this session, each day begins with a demonstration of how a subject is conceived and designed. He uses a different procedure with each daily demonstration, such as: how to divide paper, interpreting and recreating tonal values, shape making, and creating expressive color. After the demo, he is available for consultation. Each day concludes with an appraisal/appreciation of each participant’s work.

Frank Webb A.W.S., D.F., N.W.S., is a signature member of many watercolor societies. He is a world-class watercolor painter who has authored three books on painting and design and has a new D.V.D., Watercolor by the Heart, the Mind, and the Hand.

Painting with Limited Models      

Alex Powers

In this first session class the emphasis will be on finding a personal approach to art for each student. Class activities include 3 slide lectures, individual help, a demonstration, group critiques of class work and an optional consultation of work from home Models available 2 full days only.  Alex Powers  has been a self-employed painter and teacher for 28 years. He exhibits in galleries in five states and among his many national juried exhibition awards is the Gold Medal in the 1997 American Watercolor Society Exhibition. He travels and teaches workshops in this country and abroad. He is the author of Painting People in Watercolor, A Design Approach, published by Watson-Guptill, now in paperback

Painting Expressive Florals
Janet Walsh

 Using flowers as “live models”, Janet shares the thought processes that go
into creating setups. Students may work from either the live setups and/or
from their own photographs. Janet will instruct the students in working with
values, shape, size, color, rhythm and editing their composition. In addition,
there will be demonstrations, personal and group critiques, and a slide
program. Everyone will have ample time to create, experiment, paint and

winning artist and popular
workshop instructor both in the
United States and abroad. She
is author of Watercolor Made
Easy first printed in 1994. Janet
studied at the Arts Student
League and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her work has been widely exhibited and published in the United States, Europe and
Japan and is in corporate and private collections. This year her work was featured in the summer issue of Watercolor Magazine and she was listed as
one of the top 20 watercolor instructors in the Watercolor Magazine fall issue.

 The Master Class is essentially an open studio in which each participant paints in the manner that he or she chooses. There is no one mode or concept that is encouraged more than any other.  The master class, is for experienced, self-directed artists who wish to have an intense, productive work time in a positive, constructed environment. Each individual chooses to work as desired and options for critiques on their techniques and concepts.
This experienced instructor serves as a resource, critic, guide, devils advocate and monitor. Emphasis is on painting, with discussions relative to questions of interest to the group an are encouraged. All water media and combinations of media are welcome.

Glen Bradshaw A.W.S., N.W.S., N.A., is Professor Emeritus of Art from the University of Illinois. He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art”. His paintings have been exhibited internationally and he is a frequent juror for national exhibitions.

Making Paintings More personal & Stronger
Carol D. Barns

This class will focus on new ways of strengthening your painting and making them more unique and personal. A strong design and composition session is an important part of the class. Painting time and individual critiques add to the scope of the workshop. Carole teaches creative watermedia workshops throughout the US and
Canada. Her experience and enthusiasm allows everyone to enjoy the
strength, transparency, and flexibility of watermedia. Her class consists of
a fun, creative approach to watermedia (watercolor, acrylic, etc).

Carol D. Barns , A.W.S., N.W.S., has a degree with honors in Art Education from Penn State University. She has received over 40 awards in national shows and has served as AWS Awards Juror in 2005. She was chosen Acrylic Teacher of the Year by American Artist Magazine.
