Third Session November 11 -17, 2006

From Line and Shape to
Complex Surface
Gerald F. Brommer

This new workshop explores two of the major art elements, shape and line,
and how they can be effectively used in generating exciting visual images.
A variety of approaches will be used, combining watercolor or acrylic paint, collage, pen and ink, markers, and found papers and materials. A sequence of projects will lead from an understanding and effective use of shape and line to development complex surfaces. A unique and different direction will add another dimension to your visual vocabulary.
The overriding goal is to help you achieve a new freedom of expression,
to develop another way to develop surfaces, to explore alternative ways to express yourself while working with watermedia and collage, and to enjoy the confrontation with a new technique.

Figure Painting in Watercolor
Don Andrews

Artists will benefit from a more intimate understanding of color and its possibilities. Addressing the figure as the subject for a painting with the same artistic freedom employed when attempting other subjects in nature is the central theme of Don’s figure class. This class is geared to intermediate and advanced painters who are looking for a challenge.

Master Class
Harold Gregor

The Master Class is intended for accomplished, self motivating
artists who are interested in expanding their thinking about watercolor as an aesthetic enterprise. Each participant will work in any manner desired. The group will meet for an hour each morning to discuss watercolor
concepts and issues, particularly artistic assessment, analysis and traditions. The session will try to encourage an interchange between participants so that their collective understandings can be shared, questioned and discussed. Topics may include, “Color-formed space,”
“The limits of watercolor,” “The technical display,” “So
what’s new?,” and “Who is my audience?” Discussion will be accompanied with handouts. Since it is assumed that each participant already will have achieved an artistic individuality, individual scheduled critiques will involve artist options and personal goals, concerns, and
thinking. No oils please.

 Instructor:
Harold Gregor, Professor Emeritus of Art
at Illinois State University taught painting,
color theory and art history for 25 years,

a “studio-friendly” method of working since there are no smelly or toxic

or wooden spoon. You will explore several techniques including two-plated
printing, Frottage, hand printing, Assemblagraph and Chine Colle.
