Larry Kahn full obituary from Toledo Blade
Lawrence (Larry) died peacefully at home July 12, 2005,
surrounded by his loving family and friends after a lengthy battle with cancer.
During this devastating illness, his wife, Trudy, was primary caregiver who gave
the highest level of devotion conceivable.
Larry was born December 31, 1920, in Toledo to Dr. Dalton and Elizabeth (Schauss) Kahn. He attended elementary school in Point Place, graduated from Waite High School and The University of Toledo where he earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. A medical condition prevented him from active service in WWII, so Larry and good friend, John Davey, traveled to California to work in the military engineering division of Douglas Aircraft Co. in Long Beach. After the war, Larry returned to Toledo and took an electrical project engineering position with the Surface Combustion Corp.
In 1949, Larry married Gertrude "Trudy" Jaidinger, who had immigrated from Salzburg, Austria.
In 1960, Larry and John Davey formed Davey Kahn & Associates, offering mechanical and electrical engineering services to area customers. During one contract with Libbey Glass Division, Larry traveled to Japan to assist with installation and set up of a new electronic glass press control system.
Larry and Trudy both loved living near Lake Erie Shore and in 1964 purchased a vacation home at Sand Beach with their friends, John and Susie Cook. The location provided the opportunity for swimming, sailing and ice boating which had been part of Larry's youth. Larry was a member of the Sand Beach Association for many years and it's president for three of them. He designed a major shore protection project in compliance with federal specifications which is still performing as intended.
Larry and Trudy enjoyed travels to Europe, the U.S. and the Caribbean. Since 1984 they made annual Spring and Fall trips to Myrtle Beach, SC, where Trudy participated in the Springmaid Watercolor Workshops and Larry fulfilled his favorite role as a "Beach Bum".
Larry was a Licensed Professional Engineer and member of both the American Society of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and the UT Alumni Association.
Surviving are his wife, Trudy; son, Christopher (Susan), Seattle, WA; daughter, Jennifer; cousin, Ted (Elaine) Schauss, Palo Alto, CA, and grandchildren, Amanda, Christopher, Ryan and Michelle.
Friends are invited to a gathering followed by a Memorial at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo, on Friday, July 15th, from 4:30-7 p.m. Pastor Terry Priestap officiating. It is suggested that any memorial tributes be sent to Northwest Ohio Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
