Smyrna- Gold and the Charleston, Cincinnati & Chicago Railroad kept this town alive. The town was organized in 1842 and supported an academy in 1870. Besides gold, cotton was a serious industry, as is evidenced by the cotton gin and cotton warehouse buildings behind Whitesides General Store. Smyrna now has a population of 62. |

| Smyrna: Whitesides General Store Worth a look. It has the look of an Old Country Store - the kind so seldom seen. anymore. Perhaps with the rush to modernize, those few places that resist change will eventually become antique. This store is in transition but if the owners (the descendants of the original proprietor) can resist the urge to go for the new, their store will become a true representation of the past. The building itself is over 100 years old and still in usable condition. |
