Area-The story of the house known as the Sturgis House mirrors many in the area. For most of them, the stories are the same. Daniel Sturgis migrated to America in the early 1700's. He married Jean Bratton in Maryland. They set out (probably in a covered wagon), following the rutted old Indian trading paths through Virginia, settling in eastern York County. These lands on Church Road toward the Catawba River once belonged to the Sturgis family. As members moved away and parcels were sold, the original lands decreased. Many Sturgis descendants still own property and live in the area on Church Road.

The two story house which you will pass on the left just before White Horse Road is said to be the Sturgis Home Place. The house seen here is on your right and belonged to the father of Virginia Sturgis Wombel of Fort Mill. She told us that her father bought the house in the early part of the century so he could be near his kin folks.
