Driving from Cel-River Road, turn left at stop sign. Turn left again onto Sturgis
Road. Turn right onto Church Road.
Leslie Area-The
story of the house known as the Sturgis House mirrors many in the area. For most of them,
the stories are the same. Daniel Sturgis migrated to America in the early 1700's. He
married Jean Bratton in Maryland. They set out (probably in a covered wagon), following
the rutted old Indian trading paths through Virginia, settling in eastern York County.
These lands on Church Road toward the Catawba River once belonged to the Sturgis family.
As members moved away and parcels were sold, the original lands decreased. Many Sturgis
descendants still own property and live in the area on Church Road.
