York

York was established as the county seat in 1785, originally called Fergus Crossroads, as two stagecoach lines intersected here.  York's golden era was in the 1850s with many referring to it as the "Charleston of the Up Country".  Well to do Charlestonians built summer homes here to escape the humid Charleston weather. A detailed walking tour of historic York may be obtained from the Chamber of Commerce.
